The city was on the verge of disaster when Sarah finally found the artifact and activated it, closing all the portals and stopping the invasion.
At the end of the story, with the portals closed and the threat eliminated, both Orlandos were able to return to normal life. Sarah and her team were recognized for their exploits, but also realized that they had a huge responsibility for the knowledge they had gained. The “Portal of Destiny” was carefully studied and placed in a secure storage facility to prevent it from being used for personal gain.
